...Valentine's Day Gift Hop...

Hello lovely hoppers! Welcome to the Valentine's Day Gift Hop where I'm sharing my favorite Valentine's Day memory.

My husband and I met when we were baby eighteen year olds, the first day of college classes, so we've done this Valentine's Day thing a few times. But two years ago was really special in a really unexpected way. We'd just been given one day notice to sign over our house to a buyer with a contract who was interested. So we had one day to move out of state, tie up loose ends, figure out where we were going to live, pack the U-Haul...you get the idea. Complete and utter chaos. But we did it! We drove straight through to Texas, an eight hour drive, starting at 4 after an evening of frantically throwing everything into the back of a U-Haul. And after we'd unloaded all of our belongings in a storage shed back in Texas, we drove straight back to Kansas to finish signing the documents for closing on our house.

All of this happened right before Valentine's Day, and the place we'd found for me and our two young children to live was in Texas, while my husband hadn't yet found a job in our new home state yet. So we had to split up. We lived in two states while he searched frantically for a job, any job, that would put our family back together again. It took a while, and when Valentine's Day came, I was so bummed. I was already having a really hard time without my partner in crime, my dude, my teammate, my best friend and now I was spending V-Day without him for the first time since we'd been dating.

So February 14th came, and I was standing in the kitchen with the fridge door open, gathering supplies for lunch for my kiddos, and when I closed the door, my husband was standing there. My daughter and I had already received flowers from him, delivered that morning, so I thought my day was over. And there he stood with a big old beautiful grin on his face.

He'd driven eight hours and could only stay one night before he had to be back, but it was one of my favorite moments. He took me and the kids on a movie and dinner date and oh, I couldn't stop holding the man's hand. It was just so good to see him again. (and you better believe this mushpot bawled her eyes out when he surprise showed up;)

  2. Oh Tera, your memory choked me up. How wonderful your man is! My hubby boycotts V-Day, doesn't believe in it. Not that he isn't a romantic. Okay, he's not a huge romantic, but he does little wonderful things throughout the year that make me smile, and that's good with me. My best V-day memory? When I was 16 and having a rough year in high school, my mum sent flowers to me at school. At the time, I probably would have preferred a secret admirer, but now, as a mum myself, I think back on that day and know that there was no greater love in the world than from that woman, my mum. Champion and best ever.

  5. Awww. I'm not sure the husband has ever bought me a Valentine's Day gift, but in fairness the last gift he actually went out and bought me was a buckwheat pillow from Walgreens because he'd forgotten it was my birthday. So he usually just tells me to buy what I want, but he has sat and watched all the extended Lord of the Ring movies with me repeatedly, he doesn't laugh (too hard) at my nerdiness, and the first thing he does when he gets home from work is kiss me. And he's taking a week off in May so he can help my mom with chemo if she needs it, so I can go to RT convention in NOLA. The sweetest stories to me--like yours--are the ones where it's not about money, but time. Awesome post, Ms Tera!

  8. You have got the cutest hubby. Flowers, a surprise visit, dinner and movies. Oh boy, he's a keeper. My best Valentine's Day memory? That would be the year all four of my kiddies picked me roses from my garden (yes, roses are blooming in February in NZ since its summer) and they presented them to me with breakfast in bed. The silly grins on their faces were priceless. Hubby stared at them in astonishment. At that moment, he knew nothing he did could come close to that. LOL.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  14. One of my sweetest v-days was when I had just got off work and I was headed to job # 2. My boyfriend was outside of my car to say a quick hello and give me a kiss. I went to get in my car and there set a ring box I opened it to fin it empty. I turned around and my boyfriend was on his knee with the ring in his hand and he asked me to marry him! Of course I said yes! thanks for sharing!
